Tips for mixed times tables
Each fact has a twin: 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are the same. That means 121 questions, but only 66 different facts to learn.
Look at the facts in your “Practise these again” list, then play that table’s own game until they stick.
Questions and answers
How many facts are there in the times tables up to 12 × 12?
From 2 × 2 to 12 × 12 there are 121 questions. Because 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 give the same answer, there are only 66 different facts to learn.
When should my child move on to mixed times tables?
Once they can do each single table quickly, usually around ages 8 to 10. Mixing the tables shows which facts are known by heart and which are still being counted out.
How is this different from the single times table games?
The single-table games stay on one table, like the 7s. This game draws from every table from 2 to 12, so you never know which table comes next.
