What order should addition be learned in?
Children usually learn sums within 10 first (including number bonds to 10), then sums within 20 that cross ten, then two-digit addition within 100.
Why practise addition facts for speed?
When facts like 8 + 5 come instantly, children can spend their effort on the harder parts of a problem instead of counting on their fingers.
